Task

Metrics for Monitoring Digital Channels

In this task, the student selects five key metrics for the digital channels of a case company and justifies why these metrics are important. The student considers how the metrics are monitored in practice and what actions the company should take if the results are good or poor. The goal is to understand how measuring digital channels supports decision-making, customer experience development, and sales.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify the goals of the case company's digital channels and suitable metrics for them.
2. Can select five key metrics and justify their significance from the perspective of the case company.
3. Understands how metrics are monitored in practice and how development actions are taken based on their results.

Step by step

  1. Metrics for monitoring digital channels

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is that the student understands how the case company’s digital channels can be monitored using metrics, and is able to select and justify key metrics from a business perspective.

    Materials:

    • The selected case company description from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and the justified assumptions made about the company’s digital channels.

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company
Select one of the available case companies.

    2. Write a brief baseline description of the digital channels
Based on the case description, determine which digital channels the company likely uses (e.g. website, online store, booking system, social media channels, newsletters, chat).
      Write a short summary:

      • which channels are the most important for the case company

      • what they aim to achieve with them (e.g. visibility, leads, sales, customer service).

    3. Select 5 key metrics
Choose five metrics that are most important for monitoring the success of the case company’s digital channels.
The metrics may relate for example to:

      • traffic and visibility (e.g. visitors, impressions)

      • engagement (e.g. click-through rate, likes, comments)

      • conversion (e.g. contact requests, orders, bookings)

      • customer experience (e.g. feedback, NPS-type measure, response times)

      • sales (e.g. online store sales, average purchase).

      For each metric, write:

      • the name of the metric

      • what it means (what it practically measures)

      • which digital channel(s) it is particularly related to.

    4. Justify your metric choices
For each of the five metrics, justify:

      • why this specific metric is important for the case company

      • what question the metric helps to understand (e.g. “can customers find us?”, “does a visitor turn into a buyer?”, “does customer service operate fast enough?”).

Use the information from the case description about the company’s business idea, target groups and objectives to support your justifications.

    5. Describe how the metrics are monitored in practice
Describe at a general level how the selected metrics could be monitored in practice. You may consider for example:

      • how often the metrics should be reviewed (e.g. weekly, monthly)

      • who in the company would be a natural person responsible

      • how the results should be reported (e.g. simple tracking report, table, graphs).

    6. Reflect on actions based on the metric results
Select at least three of your chosen metrics and describe:

      • what it means if the metric is performing “well”

      • what it means if the metric is performing “poorly”

      • what kind of actions the company should take if the results are weak (e.g. improve content, change ad targeting, clarify the purchase path, enhance customer service).

The goal is to show that measurement is not just looking at numbers, but making decisions based on them.

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of 1–2 pages that shows:

      • a brief description of the case company’s key digital channels

      • the five selected metrics and their explanations

      • justifications for the metric choices

      • a description of how the metrics are monitored in practice

      • examples of actions that should be taken based on the results

    • Evaluation focuses on how well:

      • you link the metrics to the case company’s objectives and digital channels

      • you understand the significance of measurement in decision-making

      • your action proposals are logical and practical

    • Recommended working time: approximately 90 minutes, individually or in pairs.

    • AI tools may be used to support ideas and structure, but the final metric choices, justifications and action descriptions must be the student’s own work.
