Task

Draft of the Personnel Strategy

In this task, the student prepares a draft of a personnel strategy for the case company. They consider what kind of skills the company needs, how to find and retain the right people, how to learn and develop in everyday life, and how to support the well-being of the staff. Finally, the student selects three concrete development actions and justifies why these are important for the future of the case company.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can understand the personnel situation and needs of the case company based on the case description.
2. Can draft a simple personnel strategy from four perspectives: skills, recruitment, learning, and well-being.
3. Can translate strategic priorities into three concrete development actions and justify them from a business perspective.

Step by step

  1. Draft HR strategy

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student, based on the case description, can outline a simple personnel strategy for the case company and attach concrete development actions to it.

    Materials:

    • The case description of your selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description (e.g. industry, size, growth, customers) and on the reasoned assumptions made about the personnel situation.

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company and write a brief initial situation description
Choose one of the available case companies.
Write a brief description (about ½ page) of the personnel situation of the case company based on the case description:

      • what kinds of roles are likely present in the company

      • what the personnel size and competence appear to be

      • whether the company is in a growth phase, established, or just getting started.

    2. Draft a personnel strategy from four perspectives
Write a short personnel strategy draft for the case company, addressing the following themes:

      • Competence: What kinds of competencies does the company need now and in 2–3 years? How is it ensured that the required competence is available (e.g. orientation, competence mapping, expert roles)?

      • Recruitment: What kinds of people should be recruited (skills, attitude, experience)? How could the company attract the right applicants (e.g. employer image, channels, recruitment process)?

      • Learning and development: How is the competence of the personnel developed in everyday work (e.g. job rotation, mentoring, training, feedback culture)?

      • Wellbeing: How is it ensured that workload, work atmosphere and leadership support coping (e.g. monitoring workload, supervisory work, possibility to influence one’s own work)?

For each of the four areas, 1–2 paragraphs are sufficient.

    3. Define three concrete development actions
Choose the three most important items from your personnel strategy draft that the case company should implement during the next year.
      For each development action, write:

      • what is done concretely (e.g. “implement a systematic orientation programme for new employees”)

      • which area of the personnel strategy the action relates to (competence, recruitment, learning, wellbeing)

      • what benefit the action brings to both the personnel and the company.

    4. Justify your choices from the case company’s perspective
Write a short justification (5–10 sentences) explaining why you chose these three development actions:

      • which parts or situations in the case description they particularly address

      • why they are urgent or important for the company’s future

      • how they support the company’s business (e.g. growth, quality, customer experience).

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of 1–2 pages that shows:

      • the initial situation description of the case company’s personnel

      • the personnel strategy draft of the four areas (competence, recruitment, learning, wellbeing)

      • three concrete development actions and their justifications

    • In the evaluation, attention is paid to how well you:

      • use the information in the case description and build a logical personnel strategy from it

      • ensure that the development actions are concrete, realistic and aligned with the strategy

      • consider both the personnel and the business perspective.

    • Recommended working time: about 60 minutes, alone or in pairs
