Task

Development Plan for Skills

The student selects one critical area of expertise from the case company and prepares a development plan for it. The plan defines what is to be improved, who the development concerns, what methods will be used to strengthen the skills, and within what timeframe the change is intended to be achieved. Additionally, the student considers how to practically assess whether the skills have developed and whether this better supports the company's business operations.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify a critical area of expertise for the case company.
2. Can create a skills development plan that defines objectives, target group, methods, and timeframe.
3. Understands how skills development supports the company's business objectives and how the effects of development can be monitored.

Step by step

  1. Competence development plan

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student is able to identify a critical competence area for the case company’s operations and prepare a clear plan for strengthening it.

    Materials:

    • The case description of your selected case company from the learning material.

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company and the critical competence area
Choose one case company and identify a critical competence area for it (e.g. sales, customer service, digital competence, project management, production, supervisory work).
Briefly justify why this particular competence area is important for the company over the next 1–2 years.

    2. Define the objectives
Write 1–2 clear objectives for competence development.
      The objectives should show:

      • what competence is to be improved

      • within what time the change is intended to be achieved

      • how the change supports the company’s business.

    3. Define the target group
Define whose competence will be developed (e.g. sales staff, customer service, production team, supervisors, new employees).
Briefly justify why you chose this particular group.

    4. Choose methods for competence development
Prepare a plan on how the competence will be developed in practice.
      Choose 2–4 methods, such as:

      • training sessions and workshops

      • mentoring or working in pairs

      • job rotation and learning by doing

      • self-study (materials, online courses)

      • regular feedback discussions and team meetings.

Briefly describe for each method what is done, how often, and who is responsible.

    5. Define the timeframe
Prepare a simple schedule (e.g. 3–12 months) showing:

      • when the development actions will start

      • when the most important actions will be implemented

      • when it will be evaluated whether the objectives have been achieved.

    6. Plan the follow-up
Briefly describe how the company can monitor whether competence has actually developed.
      You may use, for example:

      • observations by the supervisor and the employee

      • sales or quality figures

      • customer or personnel feedback.

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of 1–2 pages that shows:

      • the selected critical competence area and its justification

      • the objectives of development

      • the target group

      • the development methods

      • the timeframe

      • the method of follow-up.

    • In the evaluation, emphasis is placed on:

      • the justifications for identifying the competence area

      • the clarity and realism of the plan

      • the connection to the case company’s business.
