Task

Description of Change Situation

In this task, the student selects a suitable change situation for the case company, such as growth, digitalization, or organizational change. They describe the change, identify the related challenges, and consider who is particularly affected by the change and in what way. The task helps practice examining change from both a business and a human perspective.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can describe a concrete change situation related to the case company.
2. Can identify key challenges related to the change situation.
3. Understands who is particularly affected by the change and how it impacts different groups.

Step by step

  1. Description of the change situation

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student is able to identify a change situation related to the case company, describe it clearly, and reflect on the key challenges as well as who is particularly affected by the change.

    Materials:

    • The case description of your selected case company from the learning material.

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company and the theme of the change situation
      Choose one case company.
Decide what kind of change situation you will write about. It may relate for example to:

      • company growth (new markets, increasing staff, expanding production)

      • digitalisation (new digital services, new systems, automation)

      • organisational change (new team structure, change of ownership, change in management system)

      • other similar situations that fit the case company’s context.

    2. Describe the change situation
Write a description of about ½ page on what kind of change is ongoing or starting in the case company:

      • what is being changed in concrete terms

      • why the change is being made (background reasons and objectives)

      • on what timeframe the change will take place (e.g. months, years).

    3. Identify the key challenges related to the change
Consider what kind of challenges the change may cause.
Write 3–6 challenges and briefly describe for each:

      • what the challenge may stem from (e.g. unclear communication, lack of resources, resistance to change, uncertainty)

      • what it may affect (e.g. employee wellbeing, customer experience, quality, finances).

    4. Reflect on who is particularly affected by the change
List the groups most affected by the change, for example:

      • certain teams or occupational groups

      • supervisors and management

      • customers or partners.

For each group, write 2–4 sentences:

      • how the change is reflected in their everyday work

      • what kinds of feelings or reactions the change may evoke

      • what may be required from them (new skills, new ways of thinking, flexibility).

    5. Short reflection on change management (optional, if time allows)
Finally, write a short reflection (5–8 sentences) on what management and supervisors should pay attention to in order for the change to proceed as smoothly as possible in the case company.

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of about 1–2 pages that shows:

      • the chosen change situation and its description

      • the key challenges related to the change

      • who is particularly affected by the change and how

      • an optional short reflection on change management.

    • In the evaluation, attention is paid to how well:

      • you described the change situation clearly and appropriately for the case company’s context

      • you identified the key challenges and linked them to the background of the change

      • you reflected on the impact of the change from the perspective of different groups.

    • Recommended working time: about 90 minutes, alone or in pairs.
