Task

Stakeholder Analysis in Change

In this task, the student examines the change situation of a case company from the perspective of stakeholders. They identify the key stakeholders, assess their attitudes and influence, and consider what risks arise if support is not obtained. Finally, the student prepares a proposal on how different stakeholders should be involved in the change to ensure that it is implemented as smoothly and sustainably as possible.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify the key stakeholders in the case company's change situation.
2. Can assess the support, influence opportunities, and related risks of different stakeholders.
3. Can suggest appropriate ways to involve different stakeholders in the planning and implementation of the change.

Step by step

  1. Stakeholder analysis in change

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student is able to identify the key stakeholders related to the case company’s change situation, assess their role and attitude toward the change, and consider how different stakeholders should be involved in implementing the change.

    Materials:

    • The case description of your selected case company from the learning material.

    • You may use your previously created description of the change situation and/or change communication plan, if such have already been created (not mandatory).

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company and the change situation
Choose one case company and briefly describe (5–8 sentences) what kind of change is in question (e.g. growth, digitalisation, organisational change).
Explain what the change aims to achieve and in which phase the change currently is (planning, implementation, post-phase).

    2. Identify the key stakeholders of the change
Create a list of the stakeholders who are important for the change.
The list may include for example:

      • the company’s management

      • supervisors

      • different staff groups/teams

      • customers

      • partners and suppliers

      • owners, the board, or financiers.

Choose 4–7 of the most important stakeholders and briefly describe each one’s relationship to the company and why they are important in this change.

    3. Assess each stakeholder’s support, influence, and risks
Create a short analysis for each chosen stakeholder in which you consider:

      • Support for the change: How likely is this group to support the change? What might they gain or lose?

      • Influence: How much power or ability does the group have to advance or slow down the change (e.g. decision-making power, expertise, influence over opinions)?

      • Risks: What risks arise if the support of this stakeholder is not gained (e.g. resistance to change, reduced customer satisfaction, production disruptions, reputational harm)?

You may structure the analysis as text group by group (e.g. 1–2 paragraphs per stakeholder).

    4. Propose how each stakeholder should be involved in the change
Prepare a proposal for each stakeholder on how they should be involved in the planning and implementation of the change.
      You may consider for example:

      • what kind of information and dialogue the stakeholder needs

      • in which matters they should be consulted or involved in decision-making

      • what concrete ways of involvement could be used (e.g. workshops, pilot groups, feedback channels, joint development meetings).

Write 3–5 sentences for each stakeholder describing the involvement methods and their benefits.

    5. Summarise the key findings
Finally, write a short summary (5–7 sentences) in which you:

      • explain which stakeholders are most critical to the success of the change

      • highlight 2–3 major risks related to the stakeholders

      • describe how effective stakeholder work and involvement can increase the likelihood of successful change in the case company.

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of about 1–2 pages that shows:

      • the chosen change situation

      • the identified stakeholders and their roles

      • an analysis of each stakeholder’s support, influence, and risks

      • a proposal on how different stakeholders should be involved

      • a concise summary of the key findings.

    • In the evaluation, attention is paid to how well:

      • you identify the stakeholders essential to the change

      • you analyse the stakeholders’ roles, support, and risks from the case company’s perspective

      • you present concrete and feasible ways of involving stakeholders.

    • Recommended working time: about 60 minutes, alone or in pairs.
