Task

Metrics for Successful Change

In this task, the student selects one change situation from a case company and defines 4–6 metrics to monitor the success of the change. The metrics combine both hard numbers and softer feedback information. The student considers how the metrics are measured in practice and how the results can be utilized in managing the change and further development.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can define 4–6 metrics that describe the success of the change in the case company's situation.
2. Understands the significance of "hard" (numbers) and "soft" (experiences, feedback) metrics in evaluating change.
3. Can describe how the metrics are monitored in practice and how the results can be used in decision-making and further development.

Step by step

  1. Indicators of change success

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student is able to choose and justify metrics for monitoring the success of a change in the case company. The student practices considering both “hard” (numbers) and “soft” (experiences and feedback) metrics.

    Materials:

    • The case description of your selected case company from the learning material.

    • If you wish, you may refer to a previously created change situation description or change communication plan (not mandatory).

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Choose the case company and the change situation
      Choose one case company.
Write a short description (5–8 sentences) of the change whose success you intend to measure. The change may relate to growth, digitalisation, a new system, or an organisational change.
      Briefly explain:

      • what is being changed

      • why the change is being made

      • what benefits the change is expected to bring.

    2. Define 4–6 metrics for monitoring the success of the change
Choose a total of 4–6 metrics. These should include both:

      • “hard” metrics that are measured numerically (e.g. sales, customer numbers, throughput times, number of errors, staff turnover)

      • “soft” metrics that describe experiences and observations (e.g. staff survey results, customer feedback, supervisors’ observations of the work atmosphere).

      For each metric, write:

      • the name of the metric

      • what it measures in practice

      • which change objective it relates to.

    3. Describe the practical monitoring of the metrics
Consider how and how often the metrics will be monitored.
      Write briefly:

      • how the data for the metric is collected (e.g. reports, financial figures, surveys, interviews)

      • how often the metric is updated (e.g. weekly, monthly, before–after comparison)

      • who or which role in the company is likely responsible for monitoring the metric.

    4. Justify your metric choices
Write 1–2 paragraphs in which you justify overall:

      • why these 4–6 metrics are the most important for the change

      • why it is useful to combine both numerical data and experiential data

      • how the metrics together provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of the success of the change.

    5. Briefly reflect on how the metric results are used
Finally, write a short section (5–8 sentences) on:

      • what the company’s management and supervisors should do based on the metric results

      • how good results can be learned from and reinforced

      • how poor results can be learned from and what corrective actions might follow.

    Submission and evaluation:

    • Submit a text of about 1–2 pages that shows:

      • the selected case company and change situation

      • the 4–6 metrics and their descriptions

      • an explanation of the practical monitoring of the metrics

      • justifications for the metric choices

      • a short reflection on how the results are used.

    • In the evaluation, attention is paid to how well:

      • the metrics relate to the objectives of the chosen change

      • the overall set includes both “hard” and “soft” metrics

      • the metric choices and justifications are logical and suitable for the case company’s situation.

    • Recommended working time: about 45–60 minutes, alone or in pairs.
