Task

Mapping Areas of Responsibility

In this task, the student examines a case company from the perspective of responsible management. They consider what environmental, social, and economic responsibility means for this particular company, create a brief situational overview, and identify key areas for development. The goal is to learn to perceive responsibility as part of the company's daily operations and management, not as a separate "additional task."

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can examine the case company's operations from the perspectives of environmental, social, and economic responsibility.
2. Can briefly describe the company's current state in various areas of responsibility.
3. Can identify and name concrete areas for development in responsibility in a manner suitable for the case company's situation.

Step by step

  1. Mapping of areas of responsibility

    Objective:
The objective of the task is for the student to identify the most important areas of responsibility for the case company (environmental, social and economic responsibility), describe the current situation and name key development areas.

    Materials:

    • The case description of the case company you have selected from the learning material.

    • The task is based on the information in the case description and the well-reasoned assumptions you make about the company’s operations.

Task progression (instructions for the student):

    1. Select a case company and write a short overview
      Select one case company.
Write a short overview (5–8 sentences) of the company’s operations:

      • what it does

      • what kinds of customers it has

      • in what kind of environment it operates (e.g., local, national, international).

This serves as background for the responsibility analysis.

    2. Identify the key areas of responsibility
Examine the company through three responsibility perspectives:

      • environmental responsibility

      • social responsibility (people, work community, customers, community)

      • economic responsibility (profitability, long-term orientation, paying taxes, continuity of operations).

      Write briefly for each perspective:

      • why it is important for this case company

      • in which operations responsibility is particularly visible (e.g., procurement, production, service process, personnel policy).

    3. Prepare a short description of the situation for each area
Write 1–2 paragraphs for each of the three responsibility areas describing the company’s current situation based on the case description and reasonable assumptions.
      You may consider for example:

      • Environmental: use of resources, waste, mobility, energy consumption.

      • Social: employee wellbeing, employment relationships, safety, equality, customer safety.

      • Economic: profitability, pricing, investment capacity, the company’s reputation as a reliable operator.

The goal is not to guess the “truth” but to create a well-reasoned situation description suited to the case.

    4. Name development areas
Choose at least 1–2 development areas from each responsibility category (3–6 items in total).
      For each, write:

      • what the development area is (e.g., “systematising waste sorting”, “involving personnel in decision-making”, “long-term investment planning”)

      • why it is important (what risk or opportunity it relates to)

      • what simple first step could initiate the development.

    5. Summarise the key observations
Finally, write a short summary (5–7 sentences) in which you explain:

      • which responsibility areas are currently the most critical for the case company

      • what the company’s strength in responsibility is

      • what the most important development area is that management should prioritise first.

    Submission and assessment:

    • Submit a text of approximately 1–2 pages showing:

      • a short overview of the case company

      • the three responsibility areas and their relevance for the case company

      • a situation description for each area

      • identified development areas and their justifications

      • a concise summary of the key observations.

    • Assessment will focus on how well you:

      • identify responsibility themes essential for the case company

      • describe the current situation logically based on the case description

      • outline concrete and well-reasoned development areas.

    • Recommended working time: approximately 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
