Task

Analysis of Stakeholder Expectations



In this task, the student examines a case company from the perspectives of various stakeholders – customers, employees, owners, and authorities. They analyze what these stakeholders expect from the company's responsibility and assess the extent to which these expectations are met based on the case description. Additionally, the student identifies potential conflicts and risks and suggests concrete improvement actions. The purpose of the task is to deepen the understanding of how responsible management is linked to stakeholder relationships and the company's reputation.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify the key stakeholders of the case company and their perspectives.
2. Can structure the expectations of different stakeholders regarding the company's responsibility.
3. Can analyze the extent to which the case company meets these expectations and where there are shortcomings.
4. Can suggest concrete and realistic measures to better consider the expectations of stakeholders.

Step by step

  1. Analysis of stakeholder expectations

    Objective:
    The objective of the task is for the student to be able to identify the key stakeholders of the case company and outline their expectations regarding the company’s responsibility. In addition, the aim is to analyse the extent to which these expectations appear to be met and where there are clear shortcomings or contradictions.

    Materials:

    • The case description of the case company you have selected from the learning material.

    • The task is based on the information in the case description and the well-reasoned assumptions you make about the case company’s stakeholders and responsibility.

    Task progression (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the case company and its key stakeholders
      Write a short overview (5–8 sentences) of the case company:

      • what the company does and in which industry

      • what kinds of customers it has

      • what kind of personnel and ownership structure it likely has

      • in what kind of operating environment the company functions (e.g., local, national, international).
        Based on this, name four key stakeholders: customers, personnel, owners and authorities.

    2. Identify each stakeholder’s expectations for responsibility
      Write a short subsection for each stakeholder (customers, personnel, owners, authorities). For each, write:

      • what they likely expect from the company’s responsibility (e.g., environmental responsibility, fair treatment, transparency, compliance with law)

      • which themes are particularly important for this stakeholder and why.

    3. Assess the extent to which the expectations appear to be met
      Justify based on the case description and reasonable assumptions:

      • in which areas the case company meets each stakeholder’s expectations (give concrete examples of activities, processes or values)

      • in which areas expectations appear to fall short or be overlooked.
        Write a short analysis for each stakeholder (about 1 paragraph per stakeholder).

    4. Identify key contradictions and risks
      Consider whether contradictions arise between stakeholder expectations. For example:

      • could owners’ short-term profit targets conflict with personnel’s or customers’ expectations related to responsibility?

      • what risks (reputational, financial, personnel or regulatory) arise if a stakeholder feels its expectations are not sufficiently considered?
        Write a brief summary of the key contradictions and risks.

    5. Propose improvements to better meet stakeholder expectations
      Select at least 2–3 areas where the case company does not yet sufficiently meet expectations. For each, write:

      • which expectation is not being met (from whose stakeholder perspective)

      • what the company could realistically do within the next year to improve the situation

      • how the change would benefit both the stakeholder and the company itself.

    6. Prepare a concise summary for management use
      Write a final summary of 5–7 sentences, in which you explain:

      • which stakeholders are currently the “most satisfied” and which potentially dissatisfied

      • what is the biggest risk if the expectations are not addressed

      • what is the one most important action the company’s management should prioritise first.

    Submission and assessment:
    Submit a text of approximately 2–3 pages showing:

    • a description of the case company and its key stakeholders

    • each stakeholder’s key expectations regarding the company’s responsibility

    • an analysis of where expectations are met and where they are not

    • identified contradictions and risks

    • concrete suggestions for better addressing stakeholder expectations and a concise summary for management.

    Assessment will focus on how well you:

    • identify the key stakeholders and outline their expectations

    • link expectations to the case company’s operations and responsibility

    • analyse where expectations are met and where there are shortcomings

    • make realistic and well-reasoned improvement suggestions.

    Recommended working time: approximately 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
