Task

Value Proposition Design

In this task, the student designs a value proposition for the case company aimed at a selected target group. They analyze the needs of the target group, identify the strengths of the case company, and summarize them into a 1-2 sentence value proposition. Additionally, the student justifies why the value proposition is credible and distinguishes it from competitors. This task develops the ability to structure the value a company offers from the customer's perspective and communicate it concisely.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can select and describe a clear target group for the case company.
2. Can formulate a concise and understandable value proposition for the target group.
3. Can concretely justify why the customer would choose this particular company over other options.

Step by step

  1. Designing the value proposition

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to be able to write a clear value proposition for the case company aimed at one selected target group. The goal is to answer the question: “Why would the customer choose this company?” and justify it concretely.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and on logical assumptions about the company’s customers and services.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Select the case company and target group
Choose one case company from the course material. Based on that, decide on one clear target group (e.g. a specific type of consumer, companies in a certain sector, customers in a certain region).
      Write briefly:

      • who the target group is

      • what needs or challenges it has.

    2. Describe the customer’s situation and options
Consider the situation the customer is in when they are thinking about buying something from a company like the case company. Write 1–2 paragraphs about:

      • what the customer wants to achieve (e.g. ease, savings, safety, experiences)

      • what other options the customer usually has (e.g. competing companies, doing it themselves, the “do nothing” option).

    3. Identify the case company’s specific strength
Identify from the case description and your justified assumptions 2–3 things in which the case company is particularly strong or different. These may relate to for example:

      • the product or service quality

      • the service experience

      • price and costs

      • expertise, technology or location.
Briefly explain how these strengths appear to the customer.

    4. Formulate the value proposition sentence
Write a 1–2 sentence value proposition for the selected target group. You may use the structure:

      • “We help [target group] achieve [result/benefit] by providing [solution/special way of working], so that [additional benefit or feeling].”
Ensure that the sentence directly answers the question: “Why would the customer choose this company?”

    5. Justify the value proposition concretely
Write a half to one page explanation in which you break down the value proposition into parts:

      • what benefit the customer receives (measurable and perceived benefits)

      • how the case company can deliver on the promise in practice (e.g. processes, expertise, resources)

      • how the value proposition differs from competitors or other alternatives.

    6. Summarise everything on one page
Finally compile a one-page description that includes:

      • a brief description of the selected target group

      • the value proposition sentence clearly presented

      • the main justifications for why the customer would choose this company.
Aim to produce a text that could be used as such, for example in the company’s presentation material.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately one page showing:

    • the selected target group and its needs

    • the case company’s value proposition in 1–2 sentences

    • the key reasons why the customer would choose this company.

In the evaluation, attention will be paid to how well you:

    • describe the selected target group and its needs

    • present a value proposition that is clear, understandable and relevant to the target group

    • provide concrete and coherent justifications aligned with the case company’s situation.

Recommended working time: approximately 30–45 minutes, individually or in pairs.
