Task

Developing a Business Idea

In this task, the student develops the business idea of a case company by adding a new feature related to service, pricing, target group, or channel. They justify the change primarily from the customer's perspective and assess what opportunities and risks the change brings to the company. The task helps to understand how a business idea can be developed step by step and how even a small change can affect both the customer experience and the company's business.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can describe the key elements of the current business idea of the case company.
2. Can suggest one realistic new feature to the business idea at the level of service, pricing, target group, or channel.
3. Can justify the development proposal from the customer's perspective.
4. Can assess the risks and opportunities that the change brings to the company's operations.

Step by step

  1. Business idea development

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to develop the case company’s business idea by adding one new feature and evaluating its effects. The aim is to understand how even a small change in, for example, the service, pricing, target group or sales channel affects both the value experienced by the customer and the risks and opportunities for the company.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and on justified assumptions made about the current business idea.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Summarise the case company’s current business idea
Write a short description (approximately ½ page) of the case company’s current business idea:

      • who the company’s main customers are

      • what problem or need the company solves

      • with what product or service it solves the problem

      • how the company earns money (basic model).

    2. Select the area to be developed
Choose one of the following perspectives for which you want to propose a new feature:

      • service (e.g. a new service or an extension of an existing one)

      • pricing (e.g. a new pricing model, packaging, membership)

      • target group (e.g. a new customer segment)

      • channel (e.g. a new distribution or sales channel).
Briefly justify why you chose this particular perspective.

    3. Propose a concrete new feature
Describe clearly the new feature you are proposing. When writing, answer:

      • what new the customer receives or experiences as a result of this change

      • how the change is reflected in the company’s operations in practice

      • how the change relates to the company’s current business idea (does it continue it or introduce a completely new direction).

    4. Justify the proposal from the customer’s perspective
Write a ½–1 page justification examining the proposal from the customer’s point of view:

      • what benefits or added value the customer receives (e.g. convenience, speed, price, quality, safety, experience)

      • why the customer would prefer this new solution over the current alternative

      • whether the change alters anything in the customer’s purchase journey or way of interacting.

    5. Assess the impact on risks and opportunities
Consider what opportunities and risks the change brings to the case company:

      • opportunities (e.g. new customers, additional sales, improved customer loyalty)

      • risks (e.g. increased costs, difficulty of implementation, possibility of failure, reactions from existing customers).
Write at least one opportunity and one risk, and briefly assess how they could be leveraged or managed.

    6. Summarise the conclusion
Finally, write a 5–7 sentence summary answering the question:

      • should the case company, in your opinion, implement this change?
Briefly justify your answer by referring to both the customer perspective and the risk–opportunity assessment.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit approximately 1–2 pages of text that includes:

    • a concise description of the case company’s current business idea

    • the selected development area (service, pricing, target group or channel)

    • a concrete new feature and its description

    • justifications for the proposal from the customer’s perspective

    • an assessment of the risks and opportunities of the change and a clear conclusion.

In the evaluation, attention will be given to how well you:

    • understand the case company’s initial situation

    • formulate a realistic and clearly described development proposal

    • <p data-st
