Task

Description of Operational Logic

In this task, the student describes the operational logic of a case company either as a service path or a value chain. They identify the key stages of the process and consider where the most value is created for the customer. Additionally, the student looks for areas of improvement in the process and suggests enhancements from the customer perspective. This task reinforces the understanding of how the company's daily operations and processes are constructed and where they provide real benefits to the customer.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can describe the operational logic of the case company as a service path or value chain.
2. Can identify the key stages of the process and their significance to the customer.
3. Can analyze where the most value is created for the customer in the process.
4. Can identify areas for improvement in the operational logic from a customer-oriented perspective.

Step by step

  1. Description of the operation logic

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to describe the case company's operational logic as a whole, for example as a service path or a value chain. The aim is also to identify at which stages the customer receives the most value, and which parts of the process have room for improvement.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The task is based on the case description and reasonable assumptions about the company’s operations and service process.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the case company and its main product or service
      Write 5–8 sentences explaining:

      • what the case company does and in which industry it operates

      • what its core product or service is

      • who its typical customers are.
This serves as the background for describing the operational logic.

    2. Choose the perspective: service path or value chain
Decide whether you will describe the company primarily as:

      • a service path (a step-by-step journey from the customer’s point of view)
        OR

      • a value chain (internal and external stages where value is created, e.g. procurement → production → sales → after-service).
Briefly justify why you chose this perspective.

    3. List the main stages from start to finish
Identify 5–8 key stages that belong to the company’s operational logic from your chosen perspective. For example:

      • customer’s need arises and they make contact

      • preparing a quote or proposal

      • deliver the service or product

      • billing and feedback.
Write a short description for each stage: what happens and who is involved.

    4. Identify the stages where the customer gains the most value
Review the listed stages from the customer’s perspective and answer:

      • in which stages the customer experiences the most benefit, relief, savings or satisfaction

      • which moments most strongly influence the customer’s satisfaction with the company.
Select at least 2–3 stages with the highest value and briefly justify why they are critical.

    5. Evaluate improvement opportunities in the operational logic
Consider whether there are interruptions, unnecessary waiting times or unclear points from the customer’s perspective. Write a ½–1 page description:

      • which parts of the process could be made smoother, clearer or more customer-friendly

      • what simple actions could increase value without major investments.

    6. Summarise the operational logic and value creation
Write a final summary of 5–7 sentences in which you:

      • briefly describe the case company’s operational logic “from start to finish”

      • name the main points where value is created

      • explain which stage the management should prioritise first if they want to improve the customer experience.
