Task

Risk Mapping

In this task, the student maps the risks of a case company from different perspectives: operational, financial, market, and personnel risks. They will select five key risks, assess their severity and likelihood, and propose practical measures for risk mitigation. Finally, the student will prioritize the risks in order of importance and justify their choices. This task develops the ability to assess the company's risk level and supports management decision-making in risk management.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify key operational, financial, market, and personnel risks related to the case company's operations.
2. Can assess the impact and likelihood of risks in the case company's situation.
3. Can suggest concrete measures for risk mitigation.
4. Can prioritize the risks and justify which risks management should address first.

Step by step

  1. Risk mapping

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to identify key risks related to the case company’s operations and consider how they can be managed. The aim is to practise recognising, mitigating and prioritising operational, financial, market and personnel risks.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and on moderate, logical assumptions about the company’s operations and operating environment.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the case company’s situation
      Write 5–8 sentences summarising:

      • what the case company does and in which industry it operates

      • what kinds of customers it has

      • which factors (e.g. growth, competition, resources) influence the company’s day-to-day operations right now.
This provides the background for identifying risks.

    2. Identify 5 key risks from different risk types
Select a total of five (5) key risks for the case company so that the list includes at least:

      • operational risks (e.g. process errors, delivery disruptions)

      • financial risks (e.g. cash flow, profitability, financing)

      • market risks (e.g. changes in demand, competition)

      • personnel risks (e.g. dependence on key individuals, lack of competence).
Write a short description for each risk: what the risk is, in what situation it may occur and what the consequences would be.

    3. Describe the impact and likelihood of the risks
Assess each of the five risks separately:

      • how significant the impact of the risk would be if it materialised (e.g. minor, significant, critical – briefly justify)

      • how likely the risk is to materialise in the case company’s situation (e.g. rare, possible, likely).
Write a short justification for both perspectives.

    4. Propose mitigation actions for each risk
Prepare at least one concrete mitigation action for each of the five risks. Consider for example:

      • how the risk could be prevented (e.g. better instructions, backup arrangements, training)

      • how the risk could be reduced (e.g. multiple suppliers, more frequent monitoring, automation)

      • how the consequences could be managed if the risk materialises (e.g. contingency plan, insurance, communication plan).
Write briefly what the action means in practice and who would be responsible for it.

    5. Prioritise the risks
Rank the five identified risks in order of importance 1–5 based on which the company’s management should address first.
      Write a ½-page justification:

      • why you chose risk no. 1 as the most important

      • why some risks can be handled later

      • how prioritisation helps the company use its limited resources wisely.

    6. Summarise conclusions
Write a 5–7 sentence summary that:

      • briefly states which risks are the most critical for the case company

      • assesses which single mitigation action is the most important to initiate immediately

      • reflects on how systematic risk assessment could support the company’s decision-making in the future.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 2 pages that includes:

    • a situational overview of the case company

    • five clearly described risks from different risk types

    • an assessment of each risk’s impact and likelihood

    • concrete mitigation actions for each risk

    • risk prioritisation and a concise summary of conclusions.

Evaluation focuses on how well you:

    • identify risks relevant to the case company

    • assess the severity and likelihood of risks logically

    • propose realistic and feasible mitigation actions

    • base your prioritisation on clear arguments and the case company’s situation.

Recommended working time: about 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
