Task

Key Points of the Growth Plan

In this task, the student outlines a simple growth plan for a case company. They describe the current situation, define growth objectives, select key target groups, and plan key actions, resources, and a timeline with milestones. The result is a one-page summary that could be used as an internal growth "guideline" for the company. The task develops the ability to view the company's growth as a whole and break it down into concrete steps.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can describe the starting points and needs for the case company's growth.
2. Can define simple, clear growth objectives and target groups.
3. Can suggest concrete actions, resources, and a timeline for implementing growth.
4. Can summarize the growth plan into a comprehensible whole that supports management's decision-making.

Step by step

  1. Key points of the growth plan

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to outline a simple growth plan for the case company. The aim is to answer the questions: what the company intends to grow, to whom it sells, how growth will be implemented in practice, and with what resources. The exercise also helps practise defining a timeline and key milestones.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and reasonable assumptions about the company’s current situation and potential.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the current state of the case company
Write 5–8 sentences about the company’s current situation:

      • what it sells and to whom

      • what the approximate level of revenue or activity is

      • what the case description says about growth ambitions or development needs.

    2. Define what the company aims to grow
Briefly describe what the company primarily wants to grow in the next 1–3 years, such as:

      • revenue, number of customers, margin, share of new products in sales, or operations in a new region.
Formulate 1–3 clear growth objectives (e.g. “increase the number of B2B customers by 30 % in two years”).

    3. Describe the target customer groups for growth
Specify through which customers growth will be achieved:

      • existing customers (upselling), new segments, new geographic areas, etc.
Write about ½ page explaining which customers are most important for growth and why they are the right target.

    4. Plan how the growth will be implemented
Describe 3–5 concrete actions that will be taken to achieve growth. These actions may relate to:

      • sales and marketing (new channels, more active sales work, campaigns)

      • product or service (launching new products, extending the service)

      • operating model (partnerships, distribution channels, pricing development).
Briefly explain each action: what will be done and what change it is expected to create.

    5. Assess the required resources
Consider what resources are needed to implement the growth plan:

      • personnel (new roles, training, more working hours)

      • money (investments in marketing, equipment, systems)

      • skills and partners (whether external support is needed).
Write about ½ page describing which resources are required and where they will likely be obtained.

    6. Create a rough timeline and milestones
Outline a simple roadmap for the next 1–3 years. Describe:

      • what will be done in the first 3–6 months

      • what should be achieved after about one year

      • what the goals are within 1–3 years.
Name at least 3–4 milestones (e.g. “new service launched”, “first 10 new customers”, “revenue grown by X %”).

    7. Summarise the growth plan on one page
      Write a one-page summary combining:

      • growth objectives (what)

      • target customer groups (to whom)

      • key actions (how)

      • resources and main milestones (with what and when).
Use language suitable for presenting directly to management.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 2 pages showing:

    • the company’s current state and need for growth

    • clearly defined growth objectives

    • target groups, actions, resources, timeline and milestones

    • a concise one-page growth plan.

Evaluation focuses on how well you:

    • connect the growth objectives to the company’s current state

    • present concrete and realistic actions

    • identify required resources and stages of progress

    • write clearly, logically and with a good overall structure.

Recommended working time: about 60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
