Task

Current Communication Channel Map

In this task, the student investigates what communication channels the case company uses and compiles a simple channel map from them. They examine the roles of the channels in the customer journey and assess how consistent the communication is and how well the channels support each other. Finally, the student presents development suggestions for improving channel collaboration. The task helps to understand the basic idea of integrated marketing communication through a practical case company.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify the key communication and marketing channels of the case company.
2. Can create a simple channel map and describe the roles of different channels.
3. Can assess how well different channels support each other from the perspective of integrated marketing communication.
4. Can suggest development actions to improve the collaboration of the channels.

Step by step

  1. Current communication channel map

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to identify the communication and marketing channels used by the case company, compile a simple channel map and assess how well the channels support each other. The purpose is to outline the current integrated marketing communication and its possible gaps.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the case description and on moderate, logical assumptions about which channels the company is likely to use.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the starting point of the case company’s communication
Write 5–7 sentences about what kind of customers the case company has and what communication or marketing goals it has based on the case description (e.g. awareness, sales growth, maintaining customer relationships). This serves as the background for examining the channels.

    2. Identify the communication channels in use
Compile a list of all channels that the case company is likely to use for communication and marketing. Consider for example:

      • owned media: website, newsletters, store environment, customer letters

      • earned media: recommendations, media articles, partners’ channels

      • paid media: advertising, campaigns, sponsorships.
Write 1–2 sentences for each channel: what is communicated there and whom it reaches.

    3. Create a simple channel map
Organise the channels you identified into a whole. You can describe the channel map for example by:

      • grouping the channels into three categories (owned, earned, paid)

      • marking which channels reach new customers and which serve existing customers

      • describing briefly how the customer typically “moves” from one channel to another.
Present the channel map in text form as a clear list or “network” (e.g. “Website in the centre, directed to from social media, advertising and the newsletter…”).

    4. Describe the consistency of messages across channels
Examine what kind of message and impression are conveyed through the channels. Write about half a page:

      • whether the same core messages and value proposition are repeated in different channels

      • whether the tone of voice and visual style are presumably similar

      • in which channels the message may be unclear, fragmented or inconsistent.

    5. Assess how well the channels support each other
Reflect for about ½–1 page on how integrated the case company’s communication is:

      • whether the channels guide the customer naturally forward (e.g. social media → website → contact)

      • whether the same content or campaign is utilised across several channels

      • whether there are some channels that operate separately from the others.
Name at least 2–3 examples of how the channels support each other well, and 1–2 points where the support is weak.

    6. Propose development actions to improve channel cooperation
Finally, compile 3–5 concrete proposals for how the case company could strengthen the interplay between channels. You can consider for example:

      • a clear “main channel” to which other channels lead (e.g. website or store)

      • planning campaigns for several channels at the same time

      • consistent calls to action (CTAs) across channels.
Write briefly what each proposal means in practice and what benefits it would bring.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 1–2 pages that shows:

    • the starting point of the case company’s communication

    • a list of the communication channels in use and their roles

    • a text-based channel map

    • an assessment of the consistency and mutual support of the channels

    • concrete development proposals.

Evaluation will focus on how well you:

    • identify and structure the case company’s communication channels

    • outline the roles of the channels on the customer journey

    • assess the integration of communication with justified reasoning

    • present realistic and clear development suggestions.

Recommended working time: about 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
