Task

Adapting Core Message to Channels

In this task, the student formulates a core message for a case company and adapts it to three different communication channels, such as a social media update, a newsletter, and website text. They consider what aspects are emphasized in each channel and why, as well as how the message remains consistent from one channel to another. Finally, the student justifies their choices and summarizes the key learnings. This task reinforces practical understanding of how the same core message in integrated marketing communication adapts to different channels without losing its content.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can formulate a clear core message for the case company.
2. Can adapt the same message to the requirements of different communication channels (social media, newsletter, website, etc.).
3. Understands how tone, length, and content emphasis vary by channel, even though the main message remains the same.
4. Can justify their communication choices from the perspective of integrated marketing communication.

Step by step

  1. Adapting the core message to channels

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to formulate one clear core message for the case company and adapt it to the needs of different communication channels. The aim is to understand how the message stays the same even when the tone, length and emphasis vary depending on the channel.

    Material:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the case description and on moderate, logical assumptions about the company’s customers and channels.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Define the communication objective and target group
      Write briefly (5–7 sentences):

      • what the purpose of the communication is (e.g. launching a new service, advertising a campaign, strengthening trust)

      • who the message is mainly targeted at (e.g. existing customers, consumers living in a specific area, decision-makers in a specific industry).
Briefly justify why this objective and target group are important for the case company.

    2. Formulate one core message
First write a 3–5 sentence draft about what you want the customer to understand about the case company or its offering.
Condense this into one sentence that serves as the core message (e.g. a tagline or headline).
Briefly justify (2–3 sentences) why this particular sentence describes the case company’s value proposition well.

    3. Select three communication channels
Choose at least three realistic channels for the case company, for example:

      • social media update (e.g. Instagram, LinkedIn or Facebook)

      • newsletter introduction

      • website introduction text or a front-page highlight.
Write 2–3 sentences for each about who the channel reaches and what kind of tone and length are typical for that channel.

    4. Adapt the core message to each channel
Create three versions of the core message:

      • Social media update: a short, concise text (e.g. 2–4 sentences) with a clear call to action.

      • Newsletter introduction: a slightly longer and more informative text (e.g. 5–7 sentences) that encourages the reader to continue reading.

      • Website text: a concise description (e.g. 5–8 sentences) explaining what the case company offers and why it is beneficial for the customer.
Ensure that all versions reflect the same core message, even though the tone and structure vary.

    5. Justify the chosen emphases for each channel
Write a ½-page reflection in which you explain:

      • what aspects you emphasise in social media, the newsletter and the website, and why

      • how the tone, length and level of detail change depending on the channel

      • how you ensure that the customer receives the same main message across channels, even if they see only one of them.

    6. Summarise key insights concisely
Finally, write a 5–7 sentence summary in which you explain:

      • what the case company’s core message is in this assignment

      • how the channels complement each other

      • what you learned about adapting the message across channels and what the case company could utilise in practice.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 1–2 pages that shows:

    • the communication objective and target group

    • the formulated core message

    • three channel-specific message versions (social media, newsletter, website, etc.)

    • justifications for the channel-specific emphases and a concise summary.

Evaluation will focus on how well you:

    • formulate a clear and customer-oriented core message

    • are able to adapt the same message to different channels by adjusting tone and structure

    • base your choices on the case company’s situation and the nature of the channels

    • write in a consistent and comprehensible manner.

Recommended working time: about 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
