Task

Marketing Plan Framework

In this task, the student builds a framework for a marketing plan for a case company, which includes a situation analysis, objectives, target groups, marketing methods, and metrics. They fill in the framework briefly based on the case description and consider how the different parts relate to each other. The task helps to conceptualize the marketing plan as a whole and practices structured, goal-oriented marketing planning.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can structure a simple marketing plan framework for the case company.
2. Can make a brief situation analysis and define marketing objectives.
3. Can identify the main target groups and choose suitable marketing methods for them.
4. Can select metrics for marketing to monitor the achievement of objectives.

Step by step

  1. Marketing plan outline

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to build a simple marketing plan framework for the case company. The aim is to practise structuring the situation analysis, objectives, target groups, methods and metrics in a practical way.

    Material:

    • The selected case company’s case description from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the case description and on moderate, logical assumptions about the company’s customers, competition and resources.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Prepare a short situation analysis
Write ½ page describing the current situation of the case company:

      • market and competition (e.g. is there heavy competition, is the company new or established)

      • customers (what kinds of customer groups the company has and what they value)

      • the company’s strengths and challenges from a marketing perspective (e.g. awareness, resources, skills).
Make the situation analysis as concrete as possible, but remember that it is based on case information and reasoned assumptions, not real online data.

    2. Define 2–3 clear marketing objectives
Write 2–3 objectives you want the marketing efforts to achieve in the next 6–12 months.
Formulate the objectives as concretely as possible, for example: “increase new customer contacts by 20%” or “increase the number of contact forms submitted via the website”.
Briefly justify (1–2 sentences per objective) why each objective is important for the case company.

    3. Identify the key target groups
Name 1–3 primary target groups for the marketing (e.g. certain types of consumers, local business customers, existing loyal customers).
Write a short description (3–5 sentences) for each:

      • who they are

      • what they typically need

      • how they are likely to find and evaluate companies similar to the case company.

    4. Select the marketing methods and key messages
Decide which marketing methods and channels the case company will use to reach the objectives (e.g. social media, newsletters, events, in-store marketing, partnerships).
      Write ½ page describing:

      • which methods are used for each target group

      • what kind of key message and tone is emphasised (e.g. affordability, quality, locality, ease)

      • how the methods support the set objectives.

    5. Define the marketing metrics
Select 3–5 metrics to track the execution and results of the marketing. Metrics may relate to:

      • visibility (website visitors, social media reach)

      • leads and sales (enquiries, number of offers, number of deals)

      • customer relationships (number of repeat purchases, customer satisfaction).
        For each metric, briefly describe:

      • what it shows

      • where the data comes from

      • how often it is realistic to track it.

    6. Combine the marketing plan framework into a single whole
Combine the previous steps into a clear marketing plan framework where the headings are clearly visible:

      • Situation analysis

      • Objectives

      • Target groups

      • Methods and messages

      • Metrics.
Finally, check that each objective can be linked to the selected target groups, methods and metrics.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 1–2 pages in which the marketing plan framework is presented as a clear and structured whole.

Evaluation will focus on how well you:

    • describe the current situation of the case company from a marketing perspective

    • set concrete objectives that suit the company’s situation

    • identify key target groups and select appropriate methods

    • select measurable metrics that are linked to the objectives

    • write clearly and logically.

Recommended working time: about 60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
