Task

Marketing Goals and Metrics

In this task, the student defines 3–5 concrete marketing goals for a case company and selects appropriate metrics for them. The goals are divided into awareness, consideration, and sales goals, allowing the student to understand the customer's progression from awareness to purchase. Finally, the goals are compiled into a "goal path" and a brief recommendation is made on which goals the company should focus on. This task develops the ability to set measurable marketing goals and connect them to the company's practical monitoring.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can define concrete marketing goals for the case company.
2. Can distinguish between awareness, consideration, and sales goals.
3. Can associate appropriate metrics with the goals and consider how they are monitored in practice.
4. Understands how different types of goals form the customer's progression path from the first contact to purchase.

Step by step

  1. Marketing goals and metrics

    Objective:
The objective of this assignment is for the student to define 3–5 concrete marketing objectives for the case company and link suitable metrics to them. The aim is to understand awareness, consideration and sales objectives separately and see how they are connected.

    Material:

    • The selected case company’s case description from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the information in the case description and on moderate, logical assumptions about the company’s customers, market and resources.

Assignment process (instructions for the student):

    1. Briefly describe the case company’s marketing situation
Write 5–7 sentences about the case company’s current marketing situation:

      • which channels the company appears in

      • what kinds of customers it has

      • what the case description indicates about the company’s objectives and challenges (e.g. awareness, acquiring new customers, sales growth).

    2. Define 1–2 awareness objectives
Create 1–2 objectives relating to ensuring that as many people as possible know about the company. Examples: increasing website visitors, growing social media visibility, increasing newsletter subscribers.
      For each objective, write:

      • a formulation of the objective as concretely as possible (what should increase or improve)

      • a metric used to monitor progress (e.g. number of visitors, impressions, followers)

      • a short justification of why this awareness objective is important for the case company.

    3. Define 1–2 consideration objectives
Create 1–2 objectives related to ensuring that the customer considers buying or makes contact. Examples: number of quote requests, number of enquiries, starting trial periods.
      For each objective, write:

      • a concrete objective (what should happen more often)

      • a metric that shows how many customers move into the consideration stage (e.g. enquiries, form submissions, number of booked meetings)

      • a short justification of how this consideration objective moves the customer forward toward a purchase.

    4. Define 1–2 sales objectives
Create 1–2 objectives related to actual sales. Examples: sales revenue, number of deals, higher average purchase, number of repeat purchases.
      For each objective, write:

      • a precise objective (e.g. “increase monthly sales by 10%”)

      • a metric used for tracking sales (e.g. revenue/month, number of contracts sold)

      • a short justification of why this particular sales objective is realistic and important for the case company.

    5. Combine the objectives and metrics into a “goal pathway”
Write about ½–1 page describing how the awareness, consideration and sales objectives are linked to each other. Answer for example:

      • which awareness objective supports which consideration and sales objective

      • what the customer should do first, next and last (e.g. notice the company → become interested → make contact → buy)

      • which metrics show whether customers “get stuck” at any stage of the pathway.

    6. Summarise the key insights and recommendation for management
Finally write a 5–7 sentence summary that could be presented to the case company’s management:

      • which 3–5 objectives you set and why

      • how the metrics help track progress

      • what your main recommendation is regarding which marketing objective the case company should prioritise in the coming months.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of approximately 1–2 pages that shows:

    • a brief description of the case company’s marketing situation

    • clearly separated awareness, consideration and sales objectives (a total of 3–5)

    • selected metrics for each objective and short justifications

    • a description of how the objectives form a “goal pathway” and a concise summary with recommendations.

Evaluation will focus on how well you:

    • distinguish between awareness, consideration and sales objectives

    • formulate the objectives concretely and measurably

    • choose metrics that are suitable and realistically trackable

    • base your choices on the case company’s situation and write clearly and in a structured way.

Recommended working time: about 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
