Task

Planning a Responsibility Campaign

In this task, the student plans a small responsibility campaign for a case company, based on the company's actual responsibility actions. They choose a core message, define the target audience and objectives, and design the campaign's channels and measures. Additionally, the student considers how to keep communication transparent and avoid greenwashing. The task strengthens skills in planning responsible marketing and understanding the practical implementation of campaigns.

Learning objectives

After completing the task, the student:
1. Can identify the case company's concrete responsibility actions and refine them into the campaign's core message.
2. Can design a small-scale responsibility campaign where the message, target audience, and channels support each other.
3. Understands how to communicate responsibility credibly and how to avoid greenwashing.
4. Becomes skilled at integrating marketing planning and responsibility thinking at a practical level.

Step by step

  1. Planning a sustainability campaign

    Objective:
The objective of the assignment is that the student is able to design a small marketing campaign for the case company based on genuinely implemented responsibility actions. The aim is to practice clear communication, selecting the right target group and planning channels so that responsibility is shown concretely and not only as an image.

    Materials:

    • The case description of the selected case company from the learning material.

    • The assignment is based on the case description and well-grounded assumptions about the company’s responsibility actions and marketing channels (no browsing of real websites or advertisements).

Assignment steps (instructions for the student):

    1. Identify the company’s concrete responsibility actions
Based on the case description, list 3–5 actions or solutions related to the company’s environmental, social or economic responsibility (e.g. material choices, energy savings, employee wellbeing, transparent pricing).
Write briefly about each action: what is being done and why it is important.

    2. Choose the core message of the campaign
Select 1–2 responsibility actions from your list as the core of the campaign. Formulate one clear main message from them, e.g. “We have reduced waste by 30 percent through our new packaging solution”.
      Write 3–5 sentences explaining:

      • what you promise the customer

      • how the message is based on facts rather than just impressions.

    3. Define the target group and objectives
Select one clear target group for the campaign (e.g. existing customers, new young customers, B2B decision-makers). Describe in 5–8 sentences:

      • what needs and values this target group has

      • why the selected responsibility action could appeal to them.
Set 2–3 simple campaign objectives (e.g. increased awareness, growth in website visits, contact requests).

    4. Plan the channels and actions
Select at least three channels where the campaign will appear (e.g. social media, newsletter, store, website highlight).
Describe, similar to a table but in text format, channel by channel:

      • the channel and type of content (e.g. Instagram post, newsletter feature, checkout counter display)

      • what the message says briefly (1–2 sentences)

      • how the message encourages action (e.g. read more, book an appointment, try a new service).

    5. Ensure campaign transparency and avoid greenwashing
Write about half a page where you reflect on:

      • how the campaign communicates facts clearly (figures, comparisons, boundaries)

      • what should not be promised if there is no certainty

      • how the campaign can also mention that development work continues (e.g. “our goal is…”).
Create a list of 2–3 practical principles that keep the campaign credible.

    6. Summarise the campaign on one page
Finally, write a summary of 5–7 sentences describing:

      • the main message of the campaign

      • the target group and the most important channels

      • why the campaign supports both sales and the responsibility image.

    Submission and evaluation:
Submit a text of about 1–2 pages that shows:

    • the identified concrete responsibility actions

    • the core message of the campaign and the chosen target group

    • the planned channels and actions

    • reflection on transparency and avoiding greenwashing

    • a concise campaign summary.

Evaluation focuses on how well you:

    • base the campaign on real responsibility actions suitable for the case company

    • build a clear message, target group and overall concept

    • consider credibility and transparency in responsibility communication

    • write in a structured and concrete way, referring to the case description.

Recommended working time: approximately 45–60 minutes, individually or in pairs.
